Answering Jon Dale’s question
Answering Jon Dale’s question

* You mention “la différance postale”, which is a reference to the philosophy of Jacques Derrida, from La Carte Postale. Can you tell me how Derrida’s thinking has informed your own thinking, particularly “la différance postale”? (Works like La Carte Postale and Glas are particularly creative and compelling, within Derrida’s oeuvre.)
It’s a rare opportunity to have a band that plays my own songs. That’s because there are many young people who want to do this but can’t. So It should be grateful that Maher Shalal Hash Baz is able to continue its activities. With that in mind, I sincerely hope that everyone who participates will enjoy playing freely. However, I play my songs—that is, the “seeds”—not songs brought in by the participants. So, what would the organizational structure of this collective look like? Will it be something like kolkhoz (колхоз), kibbutz (קיבוצים), or “Groupe Dziga Vertov”?
There’s a children’s game called “Telephone.” Children line up in a row, and the person at one end whispers a word into the ear of the person next to them. The person who hears the whisper then passes it on to the next person. By the time the message reaches the other end of the line, the content has often changed from the original.
Before a live performance, I hand out sheet music to the band members and explain it to them. However, the sounds that emerge are usually far removed from what I expected. “Gara Kei,” “Je est un autre,” and this latest work, “Pandemicky Pieces,” all take as their theme this difference—not in the seed, but in the fruit. Language is the home of being, but it is a matter of human household management, and its errors are, in fact, rather endearing.
Are all prayers heard? One could say they are heard, but one could also say that some prayers go unheard. In that regard, there is no significant “differance” between Deleuze and Derrida.
* Can you tell me about the significance, if any, of James Tenney’s Postal Pieces and his ‘scorecards’ to your approach to the Pandemicky Pieces?
When I first heard the sound itself, what caught my interest was its connection to Red Crayola-style rock history—specifically, its focus on microtones.
However, I later learned that these were the pieces composed as forms of mail art, with minimal instructions like Fluxus.
As I handed out my “small scores”—several years’ worth of music—to the participants gathered at the outdoor concert hall after the lockdown ended, I realized that I had been trying to convey not the interval between notes themselves.
* What changes or differences did you notice in the reproductions of your original composition, when it was reproduced by MIDI, and then by other musicians?
The MIDI sounds in the free app MuseScore are clearly different from the trendy sound quality produced by professional musicians in studios—they sound cheap. They’re created solely for performers to check their pitch.
In the past, timbre was completely unimportant to me; pitch was everything. Pitch represents the distance between myself and society. That’s why I used a free app—one where I didn’t have to worry about timbre—to convey my source of inspiration. What’s included here is a remnant of that process.
It was also an interesting exercise to digitize the “delay on the third beat of every four
measures” in “Blues de Jour,” a piece that Japanese often struggle to play well.
